Toddy has been teaching set dancing for over twenty five years.

Toddy Collins of the Clonakilty Ceili Group is teaching us the ‘Mellary Lancers’ set. There are some lovely steps in the set & each lady gets two kisses from the opposite gent.

Below is a demonstration of the set recorded at a workshop led by Pádraig and Róisín McEneany in St Anne’s Community Centre, Birmingham on 29 August 2010 at the annual set dancing weekend organised by George Hook…………….

Skibbereen Ceili 23th of Febuary

Annie and Bertie Moran of Skibbereen Ceili group held their first ceili at the GAA Pavillon on Wednesday night. Music by Jerry McCarthy. A large crowd turned up for the event. Great athmosphere. Everyone enyoyed the night.Sets were called by Annie, who did a great job. Great night.

Joe Mannix Tribute Ceili 21st February.

Caheragh Ceili group held a Ceili in honour of Joe Mannix on Monday 21st of February. Music by Tim Joe and Anne. Joe’s set dancing group danced the ‘Atha Ciara’ set, which was composed by Joe. Two of his group gave an excellent rendition of the brush dance. Joe would have been very proud of his team. After the dancing Carmel Barrett gave an oration in tribute to Joe in recognition of his great work.

Caheragh Ceili 11th February.

Caheragh Ceili group held a Ceili on Friday last the 11^th of February. Music by Jerry McCarty.

It was one of those magical nights when everyone was in mighty form. The music was fast and lively.

The dancers were well able to keep up with it. We are all looking forward to next Ceili in Caheragh next Monday.

Castletownshend Regatta.

Castletownshend Regatta Committee organised platform set dancing at McCarthy’s bar on Sunday October 24^th. It was an ideal venue for a platform in a beautiful walled garden with seating underneath a group of old apple trees. The music was performed by local artists and set dancing was organised by Gretta McNulty. The sun shone as the dancers took to the floor with waltzes and quicksteps followed by the set dancers with the castle set. Everyone joined in for shoe the donkey and more quicksteps. We all worked up an appetite for the Rosscarbery pudding and brown bread cooked and served by some local ladies. As the sun went down, we went indoors to the bar for more dancing and a sing song with some really good singers. We are all looking forward to the next session in McCarthy’s bar

Trawleybawn walk and platform dancing

I took part in the annual walk from Collomane to Trawleybawn on 12^th September 2010. The walk was in commemoration of captain O’Neill of Trawleybawn, Bantry who emigrated to America and promoted Irish music and dancing there. The walk was followed by set dancing on one platform and competition Irish dancing on another platform. It brought back happy memories of my teenage years cycling six miles to open air dancing at Harbour View. Back then, it was wonderful dancing outdoors, overlooking the Atlantic. We enjoyed it so much we forgot about cycling home in the dark afterwards, occasionally without a light on the bike.

Luckily, in Trawleybawn, the day was fine & everyone enjoyed the evening’s dancing, thanks to the hard work put in by the committee erecting the platforms on the day, and I didn’t have to cycle home afterwards!

Ballydehob – 6th August

Last Night, a fund raising Ceili was held in Ballydehob community hall. June Anderson (Ballydehob) is once again heading off to Cape Town in November, with the Niall Mellon Building Program. Music on the night was provided by the Torc Ceili Band. A smaller crowd, due to people being on holiday, but never the less a most enjoyable night of music and dancing!

Marian Hall Ballinhassig – Friday 30 July

On the last Friday of each month, Ballinhassig is the venue to set dance. Last night the brilliant music was provided by Conor Moriarty & Sean Murphy (& female friend on keyboard). Conor is the reigning Munster accordion champion. The Ceili was well attended by dancers from all over Cork County & visitors from Bath in England. Next Ceili is on August 27^th 2010.

West Cork Vintage Club Rally – Sun 25 July

After last Sundays’ cancellation due to bad weather, the West Cork Vintage Club Rally was blessed with a beautiful sunny afternoon. There were many side shows on display including a Tractor engine building presentation by the Clonakilty Fire Service, a dog show, a vintage butter making display and many more. Music was provided by Peader & Danny K. The Clonakilty set dancers danced the Connemara Set & the Dunmanway set, under instruction from Toddy Collins. The crowd took to the floor for waltzes, quick steps, two steps, shoe the donkey & many more. It was a perfect evening for open air platform dancing & great music.
